Thanksgiving meals for all

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  -- Simi Valley Presbyterian Church will serve Thanksgiving dinner The centerpiece of contemporary Thanksgiving in the United States is a large meal, starring a large roasted turkey. All of the dishes in the traditional American version of Thanksgiving Dinner are made from foods native to North America, according to tradition the Pilgrims received these  to the homeless Thursday from noon to 2 p.m. at the Samaritan Center, 280 Royal Ave.

Mayor to give Mashburn nod

SIMI VALLEY -- Mayor Paul Miller said he plans to nominate retired Firefighter Keith Mashburn to fill a vacancy on the Simi Valley Planning Commission left by the departure of Commissioner Rick Kunz, who is leaving the office after his current term.

Miller said he was sorry to see the departure of Kunz and announced he would present Mashburn's nomination to the City Council in December.

Mashburn is a longtime resident of Simi Valley who is a retired investigator for the Ventura County Fire Department Not to be confused with Ventura Fire Department.

The Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) provides fire protection and emergency response services for the unincorporated areas of Ventura County, California, and for six other cities within the county.

Moorpark gets funds for nurses

MOORPARK -- Moorpark College has received a $10,000 donation from the Los Robles Robles is a common surname in the Spanish language meaning oaks, and may refer to:
  • Alfonso GarcĂ­a Robles (1911-1991), Mexican diplomat and politician
  • Aurora Robles (born 1980), Mexican fashion model
  • Charlie Robles (born 1943), Puerto Rican musician
 Hospital & Medical Center staff organization to fund scholarships for Moorpark College nursing students.

Dr. Barry Statner, treasurer of the Los Robles organization, said the money will fund 10 $1,000 awards covering tuition and fees for the nursing program.

Light to lead Bar Association

OXNARD -- Jonathan Fraser Light was selected as the Ventura County Bar Association's president for 2007.

The senior partner with the law firm of Nordman Cormany Hair & Compton LLP LLP - Lower Layer Protocol  was scheduled to be sworn in this weekend at the bar association's annual installation and awards banquet in Oxnard.

L.A. Gay Men's Chorus to appear

OXNARD -- The Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles The Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles (GMCLA) has been a notable part of the Southern California performing arts community for over twenty-six years. Formed July 12, 1979 as a volunteer effort of 99 gay men from all over the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, GMCLA has  will perform holiday concert selections Dec. 7 at the 11th annual Ventura County Lesbian and Gay Community Service Awards in Oxnard.

The event costs $50 per person and is scheduled from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Topa Tower Club on the 21st floor of the Morgan Stanley building, 300 Esplanade Drive. For tickets and information, call the Ventura County Rainbow Alliance at (805) 339-6340.

SANTA PAULA -- The third annual Santa Paula Holiday Cookie Contest is Dec. 9.
