Meningitis may have infected 2

LA CRESCENTA -- At least one student at Crescenta Valley High School Crescenta Valley High School is an secondary school located at 2900 Community Avenue in La Crescenta-Montrose, an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The school is a part of the Glendale Unified School District.  has tested positive for meningitis, and a second student is also believed to have the disease, Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County health officials said Tuesday.

Officials from the Department of Public Health went to the school Tuesday night to administer an antibiotic to students who had close contact with the infected students.

Police seek help in finding killer

SUN VALLEY -- Police sought the public's help Tuesday in finding the killer of a 45-year-old man who was fatally shot early Tuesday on a street corner.

The body of Edgar Maldonado was found at 12:23 a.m. Tuesday at San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the  and Tuxford Street, where witnesses told police they had seen him fighting with another man.

The shooter was described as Latino, 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, and may be carrying Maldonado's backpack.

The City Council delayed making a decision Tuesday on settling a lawsuit over the arrest of homeless people sleeping on sidewalks in Skid Row.

Council OKs 2nd business tax cut

In a second round of cuts, the Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  on Tuesday approved a long-promised 4 percent reduction in the city's business tax.

``We have demonstrated that if you are a business-friendly city, you reap the benefits,'' Councilwoman Wendy Greuel Wendy Greuel is President Pro Tempore of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 2nd District. Greuel was elected in 2002 to fill the remainder of the term of Councilman Joel Wachs. She was elected in her own right in 2003 and reelected in 2007.  said.

The council last year approved a 15 percent reduction in business taxes with the promise of further reductions if revenue exceeded budget targets.

Database found offender motels

A new police database that offers information on Los Angeles County sex offenders detected a concentration of parolees living in three motels near an elementary school elementary school: see school.  site in Wilmington, the City Attorney's Office said Tuesday.

The 290-Database is the first comprehensive system for the city that tracks registered sex offenders, officials said.

The 34 parolees were relocated before classes started in September at New Banning Elementary School.

Budget adviser temporary CAO

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced Tuesday that he plans to name his top budget adviser as interim city administrative officer to take over after the retirement of current CAO Bill Fujioka.

Villaraigosa said he believes Karen Sisson possesses the skills to handle the job as he and the city seek a permanent successor to Fujioka.

Native trees will replace palms

As the city's palm trees die of old age and fall victim to fungal disease, the City Council agreed Tuesday to replace the tropical growths with species that provide more shade and are native to Los Angeles.

The council asked the city's Bureau of Street Services to limit the planting of palm trees along city streets and medians, unless it would be consistent with plants already growing in the area or specifically requested by a council member.

The council also agreed that fan palms should not be used because the trees produce large amounts of fronds that fall onto city streets.

Death penalty sought in killings

SIMI VALLEY -- Ventura County District Attorney Gregory Totten said Tuesday he will seek the death penalty against Randolph Kling, who is accused of killing a father and son.

Kling is charged with the shooting deaths of Michael Budfuloski in Simi Valley in February 2004 and Budfuloski's father, William, in Lancaster in August 2003.
