Synagogue sets Vets Day services

The Antelope Valley
, will commemorate Veterans Day with two special services.

A shabbat potluck dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the synagogue, 1611 E. Ave. J. Participants are asked to bring a nonmeat dairy main dish for two more people than are in their group.

A family-brotherhood Veterans Day service starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Veterans will bring memorabilia to display in the lobby.

Services continue Saturday with Torah study Torah study is the study by Jewish people of the Torah, Tanakh, Talmud, responsa, rabbinic literature and similar works, all of which are Judaism's religious texts, for the purpose of the mitzvah ("commandment") of Torah study itself, meaning study for religious (as opposed to  at 9:30 a.m. and shabbat service, and veterans recognition, at 10:30 a.m.

These services are open to the public.

Black pioneer subject of talk

LANCASTER -- Charles Alexander Graves Alexander Graves (August 25, 1844 - December 23, 1916) was a U.S. Representative from Missouri.

Born in Mount Carmel, Mississippi, Graves attended Centre College, Danville, Kentucky.At the outbreak of the Civil War joined the Confederate States Army and served under Gen. N.B.
, a prominent African-American pioneer in the Rosamond area, will be the subject of a talk to the West Antelope Valley Historical Society.

The meeting is 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Cedar Centre, 44851 Cedar Ave.

Speaking will be Graves' descendents, Betty Graves-Price and her family.

Admission is free. The meeting is open to the public.

Veterans, guest to get free lunch

PALMDALE -- The American Red Cross' Antelope Valley chapter will provide a free lunch to veterans.

 BBQ BBQ barbecue , the lunch will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the chapter office, 2715 E. Ave. P. Lunch is free to each veteran and one guest. A $10 donation is requested from others, with contributions going to the amenities fund for the planned Lancaster veterans home.

Meeting schedule set for holidays

LANCASTER -- The Antelope Valley Resource Conservation District's board of directors has announced a temporary schedule change to their regular public meetings.

To accommodate holiday schedules, the board of directors will meet at 6 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month at 44811 Date Ave., Suite G, Lancaster.

The board of directors will resume meeting on the fourth Wednesday of the month in January.

An agenda will be posted on the south side of the building at least 72 hours before the meetings.
