SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  -- County building and safety workers failed to show up for work Tuesday in Santa Clarita and elsewhere, in what officials described as a job action.

The Santa Clarita office of the county's Building and Safety Division was one of six offices affected by the work stoppage, which took the form of a sickout. Forty employees out of the 56 scheduled to work on Tuesday called in sick.

The employees are represented by the California Association of Professional Employees. County officials said they are in contract talks with the union, but negotiations are at an impasse.

Building inspectors, building permit technicians, and civil engineers took part in the job action.

A mediation session between the county and the union is scheduled for Oct. 19.

Blaze battled by firefighters

GORMAN -- The Hungry Valley Off-Road Vehicle off-road vehicle off nvéhicule m tout-terrain  Park, which reopened Oct. 2 after being closed for several weeks due to the huge Day Fire, was the site of a 50-acre brush fire that started shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday.

 worked alongside four county firefighting helicopters to hold flames to a ridge above the park.

Sheriff's deputies from the Santa Clarita station helped park rangers evacuate riders and campers in the area. Boaters were ordered off nearby Pyramid Lake, used by the aircraft to scoop water.
