Shooting victim a Van Nuys man

BAKERSFIELD -- The body of a man found shot to death in a field off Highway 99 was identified Wednesday as a 19-year-old from Van Nuys.

Saul Betancourt, 19, had been shot multiple times, apparently late Monday or early Tuesday, Kern County sheriff's officials said.

His body was found by a farmworker just before sunrise Tuesday off Sandrini Road, which is about 12 miles north of the Grapevine.

Authorities say rape claim untrue

White was reinterviewed about the allegations after detectives didn't see her on any surveillance tape from several gas stations. She then admitted to making a false report, saying it had to do with problems in a relationship.

Undercover drug buy sparks chase

VAN NUYS -- An undercover drug buy Wednesday turned into a five-minute car chase, with one man in custody and another man on the run, authorities said.

Field lab studies to be released

SIMI VALLEY -- A series of independent scientific studies about the potential off-site impacts of toxic contamination at the Santa Susana Santa Susana can refer to several places:
  • The Santa Susana Mountains in southern California
  • Santa Susana Pass, running through the abovementioned mountains
  • Santa Susana Field Laboratory, near Los Angeles, a test facility for rockets and (formerly) nuclear reactors
 Field Laboratory will be released at a community meeting tonight.

The panels looked at how much radioactivity was released during a 1959 nuclear meltdown and how many cancers and illnesses in the community could have resulted from the incident.

The meeting will be held 6:30-10 p.m. at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center, 3050 E. Los Angeles Ave.

Law may help curb ID theft

GLENDALE -- A new state law allowing local prosecution of mail theft will help stem identity theft, authorities said Wednesday.

The Personal Information Trafficking and Mail Theft Prevention Act authored by state Assemblyman Dario Frommer, D-Glendale, and signed into law last week updates the state Penal Code to address mail theft, a federal crime, at the state level.

It also allows prosecutors to press felony charges against anyone caught with personal information of 10 or more people.

Apartment fire victim has died

One of two people injured in a fire at a six-story apartment building in the Westlake district has died, it was reported Wednesday.
