$250,000 taken in bank robbery

BURBANK -- Two gunmen forced their way into a bank just before opening Tuesday and fled with about $250,000, police said.

The suspects, one identified to be in his 40s and the other in his 30s and carrying handguns, ambushed an employee from the bushes at about 8:45 a.m. outside Community Bank at 8400 N. Hollywood Way.

``That's how they got inside,'' Lt. Brian Matthews said.

As other employees arrived, they were ordered to a room, where they were held hostage for about an hour while the two men emptied the bank, police said.

The gunmen escaped in one of the employee's vehicles, which they left several blocks away. Authorities said they were seen getting into a waiting vehicle, driven by a woman. No one was injured.

Police are investigating the case with the FBI.

``It's a little bit more organized than somebody walking up to a banker during banking hours,'' police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Grandalski said. ``It's a takeover bank robbery, which makes it more serious.''

Police said one of the gunmen appeared between 40-45, about 5 feet 6 with brown hair and clean shaven; the other, who appeared 35-40 years old, was about 5 feet 8 and had brown hair.

Police also are seeking a woman between 40-45 with short brown hair believed to be the getaway driver.

Man found dead in harbor waters

OXNARD -- A 44-year-old Hawaiian Gardens man was found dead Tuesday in the Channel Islands Harbor where he had gone Monday to buy fish, officials said.

Oxnard police said the victim, identified by the coroner as Margarito Aviles, appeared to have drowned and no foul play was suspected. However, an autopsy was scheduled today to determine the cause of his death, authorities said.

Officials said Aviles was discovered at about 10:15 a.m. Tuesday along the 3600 block of Harbor Boulevard after fishermen in the area reported that his vehicle was still in the area. He came to the harbor Monday to purchase fish from boats coming in with their daily catch and apparently fell in the water Monday afternoon, police said. Family members said Aviles did not know how to swim How to Swim is a cartoon made by the Walt Disney Company in 1942.
