Sign-ups open for disaster team

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  -- The Police Department is seeking applications for a Community Emergency Response Team training course to provide adults with skills to help others after disasters.

The course involves seven classes to be held Wednesday, Sept. 13, 20, 27 and Oct. 4, 11 and 14.

The first six classes will be held at the Simi Valley Police Department The Simi Valley Police Department (SVPD) is the police department of the city of Simi Valley, California. The department currently has over 120 sworn officers, and more than 65 support personnel[1]. The department has a patrol area that covers over 39 square miles.  from 7 to 10 p.m. The final class will be at the Ventura County Fire Academy in Camarillo from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ellison named D.A.'s No. 2 man

Ventura County District Attorney Gregory D. Totten has announced three appointments in his office, including James D. Ellison as chief assistant district attorney, the agency's second-highest position.

Michael D. Schwartz was named special assistant district attorney, and Anthony Wold was named supervising attorney of the sexual assault/family protection unit, the position vacated by Ellison.

Ellison is filling the position vacated by Patricia M. Murphy, who was recently appointed to the Superior Court.

Home changes to be discussed

SIMI VALLEY -- Programs are scheduled Sept. 12 and 19 to help senior citizens facing physical limitations find solutions for home modifications that will help them be more independent.

The first program will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the Simi Valley Senior Center, 3900 Avenida Simi, Room 107.

The second will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Rancho Santa Susana Santa Susana can refer to several places:
  • The Santa Susana Mountains in southern California
  • Santa Susana Pass, running through the abovementioned mountains
  • Santa Susana Field Laboratory, near Los Angeles, a test facility for rockets and (formerly) nuclear reactors

Elks plan Wild West Weekend

SIMI VALLEY -- The Rick Tucker Band will perform Sept. 30 at the Simi Valley Elks Wild West Weekend, featuring a variety of Western entertainment Sept. 29 through Oct. 1.

A casino night, campfire, chuckwagon dinner and Western dancing are scheduled Sept. 29, with more dancing, a chili cook-off, a chuckwagon dinner and cowboy competitions Sept. 30. The weekend ends Oct. 1, with a flapjack breakfast and more cowboy entertainment.
