Mayor dedicates park in East L.A.

East Los Angeles East Los Angeles, uninc. city (1990 pop. 126,379), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a residential suburb of Los Angeles, in an industrial area. It has a large Mexican-American population. There is a performing arts center and a cultural center. A junior college is there.  had a new park on Sunday, the largest area of open space on the Eastside.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Antonio Ramon Villaraigosa (born Antonio (Tony) Ramon Villar, Jr. on January 23, 1953) is the mayor of Los Angeles, California. He is the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles since Cristobal Aguilar in 1872.  joined Councilman Jose Huizar at the dedication Saturday of the first phase of the 92-acre Ascot Hills Park.

The improvements made to this natural open space area since groundbreaking in November 2005 include a new entry gate structure, hiking trails, rest and picnic areas, a temporary gravel parking lot and a temporary restroom.

The second phase of development for the park will consist of the restoration of streams and native plants, and the construction of an outdoor classroom, a permanent parking lot, and permanent restroom facilities.

Mayor Villaraigosa, when council member of the 14th District, worked to secure the site and a $3 million grant from state Proposition 40 funds, the ``California Clean Air, Clean Water, Safe Neighborhood Parks Neighborhood parks, which generally range in size up to 30 acres, serve as a social and recreational focal points for neighborhoods and are the basic units of a park system. Many include a playground. , and Coastal Protection Act of 2002'' to develop the area into a passive park open to the public.

The Southland will warm up today, and be even hotter Tuesday, but the heat is unlikely to break any records and will be only slightly above normal for August, the National Weather Service reported today.

The hot weather is forecast to last through the week, and with it, high electricity usage, prompting utility companies to urge customers to conserve.
