Woman is killed by garbage truck

NORTH HOLLYWOOD -- A 65-year-old woman was killed when she was hit by a dump truck Friday, authorities said.

Firefighters were called to the 12700 block of Sherman Way about 1:15 p.m., said Brian Ballton, Los Angeles Fire Department The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), also known as the Los Angeles City Fire Department to distinguish it from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The clerk somehow got hold of the suspect's weapon and fired several rounds, striking him multiple times in the chest. The suspect fled in a getaway car but was later caught by police when he was dropped off at a local hospital.

Police are looking for the driver of the dark-colored Volkswagen Golf, described as a white man with tattoos. The investigation continues.

Suspect in killing posts $1 mil bail

A Los Angeles firefighter suspected in the murder of a San Gabriel woman was freed from jail after posting $1 million bail, officials said Friday.

Fire Capt. David Jaime Del Toro, 50, of Eagle Rock, was released just before 9 p.m. Thursday. He is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 7 in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Del Toro, a 23-year veteran of the Los Angeles Fire Department, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of murder in the death of Jennifer Teresa Flores Flores, town, Guatemala

Family Health Fair is set today

SUN VALLEY -- Free immunizations and dental screenings will be among the services offered today during City Councilman Tony Cardenas' Family Health and Safety Fair.

Reward offered in slaying case

Los Angeles city leaders offered a $50,000 reward Friday for information on the July 18 shooting death of Michael Celis, 19, of Van Nuys.

Celis was returning home from work and entering the parking area of his apartment building at 6623 Woodley Ave. when a car -- possibly a silver or white Nissan Altima -- stopped next to his car. Someone inside the car shot Celis in the head.
