Injured Arenas won't play in world championships

Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas (Grant High of Van Nuys) strained his groin during practice in Seoul, South Korea, on Monday and won't play for the United States at the world championships.

``We know Gilbert is really disappointed,'' team managing director Jerry Colangelo said. ``He's done a great job, but he is not going to be able to continue on.''

With Arenas out, the U.S. must cut one of its 13 remaining players before the world championships.

The Seattle SuperSonics and athletic power forward Chris Wilcox are nearing agreement on a three-year contract expected to average more than $7 million per season.

Wilcox's agent, Jeff Fried, said he was optimistic the contract would be completed either Monday night or early today.

Free agent forward Drew Gooden agreed to terms on a three-year, $23 million contract to re-sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers, agent Bill Duffy said.
