VENTURA -- Andrew John Hulit, 33, of Simi Valley pleaded guilty Thursday to forgery and embezzlement of over $13,600 from former insurance brokerage clients, officials said.

Hulit fraudulently collected insurance premiums from clients between 1999 and 2001, keeping the money for himself, prosecutors said.

Hulit faces a maximum of four years, eight months in prison when he is sentenced Oct. 4.

Golf event to help police programs

SIMI VALLEY -- The Simi Valley Police Foundation Golf Tournament is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Aug. 28 at Lost Canyons Golf Club, 3301 Lost Canyons Drive.

Proceeds will benefit the department's youth Explorer post, anti-drug programs, citizen's academy, SWAT team and K-9 police dog program.

Homes tour is cancer benefit

WESTLAKE VILLAGE -- The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura is seeking volunteers for the group's 15th annual holiday homes tour.

The self-guided tour A self-guided tour is where one navigates a route themselves as opposed to an escorted tours where a tour guide person directs the route, times, information, and places toured. Many self-guided tours come with suggestions, maps, instructions, directions, and items to see or do.  on Dec. 2 and 3 will raise money to support people fighting cancer and their families.

``The Holiday Homes Tour has always been a favorite annual event in the community, and I am honored to be part of this amazing vehicle for bringing hope to local families,'' said Beate Christina Waggoner, chairwoman for the tour event.

Habitat will get bowling earnings

SIMI VALLEY -- A bowl-a-thon to raise money for Habitat for Humanity Habitat for Humanity, nonprofit ecumenical Christian organization that enables low-income people to own affordable, livable housing. Headquartered in Americus, Ga., it was founded in 1976 by businessman Millard Fuller and his wife.  is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Brunswick Bowl, 5255 Cochran St.

Retired doctor lauded by Rotary

SIMI VALLEY _ Dr. Otto Austel has received the Rotary Foundation's Distinguished Service Award, one of 50 awards presented to Rotarians worldwide each year.

Austel is a member of the Rotary Club of Simi Valley who retired as a physician in Simi Valley in 1996, but went on to travel the world volunteering his services. He served as a volunteer with the Centers for Disease Control and a consultant for the World Health Organization, and has been active in Rotary International's efforts to eradicate polio in the world.

He has helped the Karaja Indian Tribe INDIAN TRIBE. A separate and distinct community or body of the aboriginal Indian race of men found in the United States.

Harbor museum seeks volunteers

OXNARD -- The Ventura County Maritime Museum A maritime museum (sometimes nautical museum) is a museum specializing in the display of objects relating to ships and travel on seas and lakes. A naval museum focuses on navies and military use of the sea.  is seeking volunteers to conduct guided tours, do research and help out in the office at the museum in Channel Islands Harbor. The museum has 100 volunteers, and docent training classes are scheduled from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Mondays from Sept. 11 through Nov. 20. Call (805) 984-0822.
