Santa Clarita part of 2007 Tour of California race

Santa Clarita will be the next-to-last stop on the 2007 Amgen Tour of California The Amgen Tour of California is a professional cycling stage race on the UCI America Tour and USA Cycling Professional Tour that made its debut on February 19, 2006. Sponsored by the biotechnology company Amgen, the eight-day race covers between 650-700 miles (1,045 - 1,126 km).  cycling road race that will start in San Francisco and conclude in Long Beach, organizers said Thursday.

World's most prestigious and difficult bicycle race. Staged for three weeks each July—usually in some 20 daylong stages—the Tour typically comprises 20 professional teams of nine riders each and covers some 3,600 km (2,235 miles) of flat and
 title, won the inaugural Tour of California earlier this year that went through Thousand Oaks, home base for the title sponsor Amgen. It drew an estimated 1.3 million spectators along the way over eightdays.

The 2007 race, which visits 12 cities, is scheduled to begin Feb. 18 with 150 of the world's top cyclists. Stage six will go from Santa Barbara to Santa Clarita on Feb. 24 before ending with a circuit race in Long Beach the next day.

Sacramento city leaders reached a deal to build a new downtown arena for the NBA's Kings, using a quarter-cent sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  that would require voter approval in November.

TENNIS: Serena Williams took another step in her comeback from a chronic left knee injury, beating Bethanie Mattek 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals in the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open in Mason, Ohio. Williams also found out that she will need a wild-card spot for the main draw of the upcoming U.S. Open because the two-time Open champ is currently ranked 139th.
