Reward offered in temple attack

TARZANA -- The City Council voted Tuesday to offer a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever vandalized an Orthodox Jewish synagogue in Tarzana.

Someone spray-painted profanities and anti-Semitic slurs on the walls and tried to set fire to the front door of Temple Beith David about 8 a.m. on July 7, causing about $9,000 in damage to the building at 18648 Clark St.

Debi Weiss of the temple said the sanctuary where the Torahs are kept also was spray-painted with offensive words.

The vandalism didn't deter the temple's Orthodox Jewish congregation -- many of them of Iranian descent -- from moving into their new temple during a ceremony the following day.
