Book sale every Thursday night

PALMDALE -- The Friends of Palmdale City Library will sell books at the Thursday Night on the Square street festival at Poncitian Square, 38315 9th St. E.

The festival runs 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. each Thursday through Sept. 7.

The group will offer a large selection of hardback and paperback books, including both fiction and nonfiction. Paperback books will be sold for 50 cents while selected hardbacks will go for $1.

Thursday Night on the Square also offers fresh fruit and vegetables, live entertainment, arts and crafts arts and crafts, term for that general field of applied design in which hand fabrication is dominant. The term was coined in England in the late 19th cent. as a label for the then-current movement directed toward the revivifying of the decorative arts. , food and activities for children.

Legal research classes planned

LANCASTER -- Monthly legal research classes will begin Aug. 9 at the Lancaster Library, 601 W. Lancaster Blvd.

The classes, held 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month until Dec. 13, focus on legal research using a computer.

Participants will learn how to find cases using free Web sites and Lexis Lexis®

An online legal information service that provides the full text of opinions and statutes in electronic format. Subscribers use their personal computers to search the Lexis database for relevant cases. They may download or print the legal information they retrieve.

Donations sought to build memorial

PALMDALE -- The Palmdale Woman's Club has joined with the Palmdale and Lancaster Sheriffs Boosters to spearhead a campaign to erect a memorial to fallen officers and firefighters of the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. The groups hope to construct the memorial outside the front entrance to the Antelope Valley Mall The Antelope Valley Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in Palmdale, California.

Opened in September, 1990, its buildings take up around 1 million square feet (90,000 m²). Its physical main building, parking lots, and ring road businesses encompass an area a bit less than 0.

The Palmdale Woman's Club is accepting donations on behalf of the memorial.

8-week class set on self defense

PALMDALE -- The city Parks and Recreation Department will offer kuk sool won Kuk Sool Won is a comprehensive Korean martial arts system founded by In Hyuk Suh in 1958. The name Kuk Sool Won translates to "National Martial Art" and it is currently taught worldwide with hundreds of registered schools.  lessons beginning today from 5:15 to 6 p.m. at the Marie Kerr Park activity building, 39700 30th St. W.

The class offers students the opportunity to learn traditional Korean self-defense techniques, forms and routines. The eight-week class also aims to build student's self-confidence, strength and coordination.

The class costs $80 for the session.
