Seabee Days sail into town

PORT HUENEME Port Hueneme (wī'nē`mē), city (1990 pop. 20,319), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast; founded 1870, inc. 1948. It has an artificial deep-sea harbor and is the site of a huge naval construction-battalion (Seabee) center.  -- Naval Base A naval base primarily for support of the forces afloat, contiguous to a port or anchorage, consisting of activities or facilities for which the Navy has operating responsibilities, together with interior lines of communications and the minimum surrounding area necessary for local  Ventura County will host its annual Seabee Days on June 24-25, and organizers are seeking public entries for a classic car show, motorcycle show, poker run and karaoke contest.

There will also be several sports tournaments, including softball, basketball and golf, open to members of the military.

Seabee Days is a free celebration of the Naval Construction Force The combined construction units of the Navy, including primarily the mobile construction battalions and the amphibious construction battalions. These units are part of the operating forces and represent the Navy's capability for advanced base construction. Also called NCF. , featuring ship tours, musical entertainment and a carnival. It runs from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. both days.

Seniors learn financial safety

SIMI VALLEY -- The Police Department will host a seminar on June 20 to help senior citizens protect their finances from fraud and other criminal activity.

The Financially Prudent Senior will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. at City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.

Representatives from the Ventura County District Attorney's office, the state Department of Corporations, the Ventura County Financial Abuse Specialist Team, the California Department of Insurance The California Department of Insurance (CDI), established in 1868, is the angency charged with overseeing the regulation of insurance regulations, enforcing statutes mandating consumer protections, educating consumers, and fostering the stability of insurance markets in the state  and other groups will be available to inform senior citizens of their rights and potential problems.

Chumash basket expert featured

OXNARD -- An authority on Chumash Indian basketry basketry, art of weaving or coiling and sewing flexible materials to form vessels or other commodities. The materials used include twigs, roots, strips of hide, splints, osier willows, bamboo splits, cane or rattan, raffia, grasses, straw, and crepe paper.  will be featured at Saturday's meeting of the Ventura County Handweavers and Spinners Guild.

The 9:30 a.m. program will be presented by Jan Timbrook, curator of ethnography at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History is the oldest museum in Santa Barbara, California, founded in 1916. The museum is located in Mission Canyon, immediately behind the Santa Barbara Mission. , which has one of the largest Chumash basketry collections in the world.

American West art highlighted

SIMI VALLEY -- The American West is the theme of several exhibits at the Simi Valley Senior Center during June and July.

In June the center at 3900 Avenida Simi is featuring the drawings of Richard Wellington Evans and the sculptures of Dot Stage. In July the center will feature the equestrian paintings of Pat Duggan.

Brimhall library shut 'til June 24

THOUSAND OAKS -- The Grant Brimhall Library, 1401 Janss Road, will be closed for two weeks to prepare for the June 24 opening of its expanded children's area.

The new section will feature a separate entrance, check-out desk, drive- up book return, story-time room, children's garden, outdoor family courtyard and a 3,600-gallon saltwater aquarium.

The grand opening is scheduled at 9:30 a.m., with special family activities planned throughout the day.
