Pollution to be reduced at ports

SAN PEDRO -- Nearly 400 tons a year of vessel-related pollution at the ports of Los Angeles and Oakland will be eliminated under a program announced Friday by Maersk Line.

The shipping company -- one of the world's largest -- agreed to switch to low-sulfur fuel on the engines of its vessels within 24 miles of California ports and while docked.

As a result, Maersk expects particulate emissions to be reduced by 73 percent, sulfur dioxide by 92 percent and nitrogen oxide by at least 10 percent.

The company began making the fuel switch in Los Angeles on March 31, and the program will soon be implemented on all of Maersk's vessels that come to California.
