Council supports own in Senate run

Ten of Los Angeles' 15 council members voiced support Friday for Councilman Alex Padilla Alex Padilla is a politician in California. He was elected as the State Senator for the 20th District of California in November 2006 and was inaugurated in early December. In order to enter the Senate he had to resign as Councilman for the 7th District on the Los Angeles City  in his bid for the 20th District state Senate seat.

The announcement is a boost for Padilla, who is seeking to join the state Legislature A state legislature may refer to a legislative branch or body of a political subdivision in a federal system.

The following legislatures exist in the following political subdivisions:
 after seven years on the City Council.

Padilla's opponent, Assemblywoman Cindy MontaNez, is expected to get the endorsement of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Antonio Ramon Villaraigosa (born Antonio (Tony) Ramon Villar, Jr. on January 23, 1953) is the mayor of Los Angeles, California. He is the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles since Cristobal Aguilar in 1872.  today.

Council members Greig Smith Greig Smith is a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 12th District, which includes Granada Hills, Northridge and other parts of the Western San Fernando Valley. Smith is also a reserve officer for the Los Angeles Police Department. , Tony Cardenas Tony Cardenas served in the California State Assembly. In the Assembly, he had the powerful position of chair of the Budget Committee. He is now a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 6th district, which includes parts of the San Fernando Valley. , Dennis Zine, Ed Reyes Ed P. Reyes has served on the Los Angeles City Council since April 2001. A native of Northeast Los Angeles, Councilmember Reyes represents many of the neighborhoods he grew up in including Lincoln Heights and Cypress Park. , Tom LaBonge Tom LaBonge (b. Los Angeles 1953), member of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 4th district. He has served since 2001, taking over the position upon the death of John Ferraro. , Bernard Parks, Herb Wesson, Bill Rosendahl and Jose Huizar endorsed Padilla.

At a press conference outside Van Nuys City Hall on Friday, council members praised Padilla for leading the fight for Proposition 1A, which limited the amount of local revenue that could be taken by the state.

Padilla said he was honored to get the nod from his fellow council members. As for Montanez's expected endorsement, Padilla said: ``I look forward to working with the mayor after I win.''

The primary election for termed-out Sen. Richard Alarcon's seat is June 6.

Two men sought in robbery case

BURBANK -- A man posing as a construction worker distracted an 85-year-old woman while an accomplice robbed her of a diamond ring and $120 cash, officials said Friday.

The suspect went to the victim's Evergreen Street home about 3 p.m. Wednesday and said he needed to protect her shrubbery from nearby construction and went with her into her backyard, Burbank Police Sgt. Jay Jette said.

During the 10 minutes they were outdoors, an accomplice entered the house and stole a diamond wedding ring from the front room and $120 cash out of the woman's purse, police said.

One suspect was described as 5-foot-7, 40 to 50 years old with a dark complexion and gray mustache. No description of an accomplice was available.

Web site helps rally participants

A Web site has been established to provide legal services legal services n. the work performed by a lawyer for a client.  for people facing consequences as a result of skipping work and school to participate in Monday's rallies for undocumented immigrants.

The March 25th Coalition set up the Web site and a nationwide hotline to connect attorneys with people who may have been fired or issued truancy citations as a result of Monday's activities.

Legal services will be provided for free.

Landslide lawsuit trimmed by judge

VENTURA -- A judge tossed out some claims filed against Ventura County by relatives of people killed last year in the La Conchita landslide.

Superior Court Judge Vincent O'Neill on Thursday rejected claims including trespassing and negligence, but did allow plaintiffs' claims of wrongful death The taking of the life of an individual resulting from the willful or negligent act of another person or persons.

If a person is killed because of the wrongful conduct of a person or persons, the decedent's heirs and other beneficiaries may file a wrongful death action
 and other allegations to go forward.

Twenty-three lawsuits have been filed against the county by 39 plaintiffs. The lawsuits claim county officials failed to protect the residents from the Jan. 10, 2005, mudslide that killed 10 people and destroyed 13 homes.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is the largest municipal utility in the United States, serving 3.9 million residents in 2006. It was founded in 1902 to deliver water and electricity supplies to residents and businesses in Los Angeles.  warned customers on Friday to be aware of con artists posing as DWP employees to collect money for water and electric services.

Customers should not provide callers with any personal information, DWP spokeswoman Darlene Battle said. If the DWP calls a customer, the representative will already have a copy of the customer's bill with the pertinent details, she said.

Also, there is little reason for an employee to enter a customer's home except for a prescheduled service call made at the customer's request.

Customers with questions about their bills should call 1-800-DIAL-DWP.
