The judge scheduled a May 15 arraignment A criminal proceeding at which the defendant is officially called before a court of competent jurisdiction, informed of the offense charged in the complaint, information, indictment, or other charging document, and asked to enter a plea of guilty, not guilty, or as otherwise permitted .

Palmer also lowered Eriksson's bail from $5.5 million to $3 million, saying he was ``struck by the fact'' the original figure in the embezzlement case was five times the normal amount for a person charged with murder. County may pay big for collision

The Los Angeles County Claims Board signed off Monday on a $1.75 million proposed settlement for a couple seriously hurt in a head-on collision on Sierra Highway that killed the driver of the other car.

The Board of Supervisors, which must approve any settlement of more $100,000, is scheduled to take a vote on May 16.

Rouvenie and Rodel Robianes were northbound on Sierra Highway on Dec. 8, 2001, when a southbound vehicle driven by Gary Plyley, 51, crossed over the center line and collided with their car, according to a County Counsel memo.

Rouvenie Robianes, who suffered a cervical spine cervical spine Clinical anatomy The region of the vertebral column encompassing C1 through C7  fracture and broken legs, could no longer work as a nurse due to the extent of her injuries. Her husband suffered chest injuries that required open heart surgery.

The couple sued the county, contending that section of the highway where the crash occurred did not have a speed limit posted and was not lighted. The Robianes also allege the roadway was in dangerous condition and lacked safety features such as a median guardrail.

Speed advisory and warning signs, however, were posted in both directions just before the curve, according to the County Counsel memo.

Sentencing delay in defraud case

Sentencing has been rescheduled to June 14 for a Van Nuys man who ran an investment scam that primarily targeted Armenian-Americans and took in nearly $20 million, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Monday.

Melkon Gharakhanian, who authorities say also used the name Mike Garian, pleaded guilty in January to one count of mail fraud.

If U.S. District Judge George Schiavelli follows the recommendations in a plea deal between Gharakhanian and prosecutors, the 43-year-old defendant could be sentenced to two to four years behind bars.

Gharakhanian admitted that between 1999 and 2001, a Glendale investment firm that he and others ran, National Investment Enterprises Inc., took money from people who believed they were investing in specific stocks - including initial public offerings for Internet businesses and other high-tech companies.
