Squad blows up dry-ice explosive

TOLUCA LAKE - A member of a Los Angeles police bomb squad disarmed an explosive dry-ice device in a Toluca Lake neighborhood by shooting it, a sergeant said Sunday.

A bomb squad sent to the 10800 block of Bloomfield Street about 11 p.m. Saturday found that one plastic bottle packed with dry ice had exploded, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Larry Poehls of the North Hollywood station.

A mixture of dry ice and water in a sealed 1- or 2-liter plastic bottle will build up enough pressure to cause the container to explode, he said.

Arriving members of the bomb squad found a second device in the street, and one of them shot the bottle, Poehls said.
