Man in car crash faces new woes

Low-cost housing work is begun

Los Angeles city officials broke ground Tuesday on a 47-unit low-income affordable housing project in Canoga Park.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Councilman Dennis Zine commemorated the start of construction of the Hart Village. Seven run-down homes were demolished to develop the site at 6941 Owensmouth Ave., Canoga Park.``Hart Village is an example of the Affordable Housing Trust fund at work,'' Villaraigosa said.

Overall cost of the project is $20.2 million.

Suspect arrested in San Diego

A 24-year-old man has been arrested in San Diego on suspicion of killing a former soccer teammate in Pacoima, authorities said Tuesday.

Camerino Reyes, a former player for Aztlan, a soccer team in the Massaya soccer league, was arrested in San Diego after his family called police, LAPD 1. LAPD - Link Access Procedure on the D channel.

 Detective Chuck Lenane said Tuesday.

Reyes is suspected of shooting Jaime Villavazo, 22, Sunday at Ritchie Valens Park in Pacoima just before an Aztlan soccer game. Reyes and Villavazo were Aztlan teammates, Lenane said.

When police arrived at the park, Villavazo was dead, and witnesses told police Reyes was the gunman.

Reyes fled to Tijuana, but his sister convinced him to return to San Diego and turn himself in, Lenane said, avoiding what could be a complicated extradition process.

 suggests `smart meters'

A City Council committee directed four city departments to develop a plan with the Department of Water and Power to install ``smart meter'' lawn sprinklers at facilities owned by the city Los Angeles.

The council's Information Technology and General Services Committee directed the Recreation and Parks and General Services departments to work with the city's administrative officer and chief legislative analyst in developing the plan with the DWP.

``Smart meter'' technology utilizes wireless weather data to regulate irrigation irrigation, in agriculture, artificial watering of the land. Although used chiefly in regions with annual rainfall of less than 20 in. (51 cm), it is also used in wetter areas to grow certain crops, e.g., rice.  systems to adapt water usage to actual need, helping prevent over-watering.

New design bill OK'd by panel

A bill allowing Caltrans to use the design-sequencing method of construction to speed completion of highway projects won tentative support Tuesday from the Senate Transportation Committee.

Law school will not lose approval

WOODLAND HILLS - The University of West Los Angeles The University of West Los Angeles (UWLA) is a private, non-profit School of Law with two campuses in the Los Angeles metropolitan area in Inglewood and Woodland Hills, California. The School of Law is accredited by the Committee of Bar Examiners of The State Bar of California.  School of Law has gotten a reprieve from the California Bar Association.

The state Committee of Bar Examiners decided over the weekend to put the school on probation through June 30, 2007, suspending its notice of deficiency. The committee had voted in January to terminate its accreditation of the school, but UWLA UWLA University of West Los Angeles (California)  appealed.
