Volunteers sought for advisory panel

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - The city is seeking two regular members, and two alternates, to serve on the Citizens' Election Advisory Commission.

The five-member advisory board to the City Council meets about five times during an election year and reviews campaign financial statements.

The panel also prepares candidate and committee orientation briefings and informs candidates and their committees of state and local election requirements.

Ventura lawyers will honor judge

OXNARD - The Ventura County Trial Lawyers Association will recognize Manuel Covarrubias as 2006 Judge of the Year at the Judges Night dinner 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Residence Inn Oxnard River Ridge.

The annual event recognizes the service of all Ventura County bench officers.

``Judge Covarrubias has served our community as an exemplary bench officer who is always courteous to counsel and respectful and caring of the litigants who appear before him,'' said Joel Mark, VCTLA vice president. ``He is an asset to our court and very deserving of this recognition.''

Covarrubias has served in the Family Law Department of the Ventura County Superior Court since 1995, first as a Superior Court commissioner and then as a Superior Court judge following his appointment to the Superior Court in 2002.

Last year, he served as Family Law supervising judge until February 2006, when he was reassigned to the Juvenile Delinquency Court.

Covarrubias serves on the California Judicial Council Access and Fairness Committee, co-chairs the Race and Ethnic Subcommittee and is a member of the California Judges' Association. He is a former member and past president of the Mexican American Bar Association of Ventura County.

Wellness group to hold fundraiser

WESTLAKE VILLAGE - The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura will end celebrations marketing its 15th anniversary with a fundraiser June 9 at Sherwood Country Club in Westlake Village.

The group is seeking donations for silent and live auctions at the gala, with proceeds benefiting the organization's free programs.

The week's celebrations will begin with the annual National Cancer Survivors Day Picnic on June 3 and will include educational programs.
