Woman charged in home killing

 was charged Monday on suspicion of murdering her ex-boyfriend March 6 in her Northridge home.

Kimberly Carter appeared in San Fernando Superior Court on Monday, but her arraignment A criminal proceeding at which the defendant is officially called before a court of competent jurisdiction, informed of the offense charged in the complaint, information, indictment, or other charging document, and asked to enter a plea of guilty, not guilty, or as otherwise permitted  was postponed to March 28. She is being held on $5 million bail.

Police believe Carter shot her ex-boyfriend, Harry Phillips Jr., 42, on March 6 and then fled to Palm Springs, where she was apprehended three days later. Phillips' body was found on March 7 in Carter's home on the 11200 block of Garden Grove Garden Grove, city (1990 pop. 143,050), Orange co., S Calif., a suburb of Long Beach and Los Angeles, on the Santa Ana River; founded 1877, inc. 1956. Carter was convicted of robbing two banks in Detroit in 2000 and served three years in federal prison. She ran a mortgage company out of the house, and Phillips was unemployed.

Police seek help in street shooting

PANORAMA CITY - Los Angeles police detectives, with little to go on, asked Monday for the public's help in solving the shooting death of a Panorama City resident.

Viviano Galvan, 23, was shot several times at Rayen Street and Cedros Avenue late in the afternoon of March 5.

The unidentified suspects fled in a white sedan following the 4:48 p.m. shooting. Galvan was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to call homicide detectives at the LAPD's Mission Division at (818) 838-9810.

Sleep suspected in crash into bus

The MTA bus was traveling east at Vanowen at about 25 mph when the bus driver noticed the man's vehicle heading west, drifting over the double-yellow line, Henry said. The bus driver tried to slow down, and the bus was traveling at about 10 mph when the vehicles collided head-on.

Police believe the driver of the SUV likely fell asleep while driving.

Four passengers on the bus complained of minor injuries but none were taken to local hospitals, Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

Antranik Khajarian was sentenced on Friday in Pasadena Superior Court. His grandmother, Arpine Demerjian, was 92 years old when Khajarian set fire to her room with gasoline he poured out of a container, then drove away from the home he shared with his family.

Job help center seeks donations

BURBANK - The Burbank Temporary Aid Center, which helps provide short-term assistance for the homeless and working poor in Burbank, is seeking donors for a $1.45 million, 5,500-square-foot building set to open March 28 at 1304 W. Burbank Blvd.

Dishwasher scam is hung out to dry

MONTROSE - A 60-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of cheating elderly customers who called his Montrose Washer Service company, police said Monday.

John Raymond Aasen would go to the elderly customers homes and inspect their washers or kitchen appliances, then recommend that they needed new parts or equipment, according to the Glendale Police Department. Investigators said Aasen would ask for the money up front, then leave without ever coming back and installing the parts or equipment.

Aasen, who police say carried on the scam between September and January, was arrested on Saturday.
