Gallegly rejects re-election rumor

Rep. Elton Gallegly Elton W. Gallegly (born March 7 1944), an American politician, has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1987, currently representing the 24th District of California (map). , R-Simi Valley, stamped out rumors Tuesday that he might reconsider his plans to retire.

Gallegly's announcement Friday that he will leave Congress at the end of the year has caused turmoil among Ventura County Republicans because by the time Gallegly withdrew it was too late to remove his name from the ballot or extend the filing deadline.

The result: barring a successful court challenge to remove his name and extend the deadline, Gallegly will appear on the primary ballot along with Michael Tenenbaum, a previously unknown businessman and law professor from Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown. .

While GOP leaders have urged Gallegly to reconsider and run for one more term, spokesman Tom Pfeifer said the congressman has ruled out that possibility.

Shooting trio each get life sentences

Three men who wanted to avenge the stabbing of a friend were sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for their roles in the 2001 shooting death of a 15-year-old boy.

Water safety guru Lanning dies at 64

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - Honey Lanning, a nationally recognized water safety expert with 30 years' experience, died March 8 of cancer. She was 64.

Lanning, a Simi Valley swim instructor whose students included children of celebrities, was the founder of PAD (Parents Against Drowning) and simiswim.com. The Finland native also produced an award-winning instructional video for children ages 1 to 3 called ``Swimming for Toddlers.''

Services for Lanning will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cornerstone Community Cornerstone Community[1] is an Australian non-denominational Christian training and mission movement.

 cash into the country led to the discovery of 250 bogus bills - in billion-dollar denominations - in a West Hollywood home, authorities said Tuesday.

The bills looked like legal tender, authorities said, though such currency does not exist.

Tekle Zigetta, 45, entered his guilty plea Monday to three federal counts for trying to bring $37,000 into the United States in 2002 following a trip to Korea.

Along with the cash, Zigetta allegedly had a counterfeit $100 bill, a counterfeit $100,000 gold certificate, and images of counterfeit $1 bills when he was searched by U.S. Customs agents, according to a search warrant affidavit filed by the government.

The investigation led agents on Friday to search an elderly couple's apartment, where they found 250 billion-dollar bills - with an issue date of 1934 - that bore a picture of President Grover Cleveland, according to Immigration immigration, entrance of a person (an alien) into a new country for the purpose of establishing permanent residence.
