Funds to be used to educate nurses

GLENDALE - The Glendale City Council has voted unanimously to use $515,000 in state funds to train nurses for RN positions in the east San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.

The money will be used to train 124 nurses over the next two years, turning licensed vocational nurses into registered nurses, officials said. RNs are increasingly in demand at area hospitals.

The $515,000 comes from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's discretionary budget, and Glendale was chosen to administer the funding. The training will happen at area hospitals and local community colleges, and the Verdugo Workforce Investment Board Workforce Investment Boards (or "WIBs") are regional entities created to implement the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 in the United States, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of Palau and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.  will oversee the program.

Ground is broken for health center

WOODLAND HILLS - The Motion Picture and Television Fund broke ground Wednesday on the Saban Center for Health and Wellness.

A grant from the Saban Family Foundation will fund construction of the center, which is scheduled to open in September 2007 to help retirees living in the Motion Picture Country Home focus on disease prevention and health maintenance.

Dinner gala set for award winner

UNIVERSAL CITY - J. Richard Leyner of Northridge, this year's Fernando Award winner, will be honored for volunteerism at a dinner gala on Feb. 24.

The Fernando Awards recognition dinner is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Universal Hotel, 333 Universal Hollywood Drive.

Flight maneuvers trigger warning

PACOIMA - A Cessna aircraft doing illegal flight maneuvers over a populated area of Northern Los Angeles County was forced to land at Whiteman Airpark air·park

 on Wednesday by a sheriff's helicopter crew, authorities said.

A certified flight instructor and a student in the Cessna were given a warning for violating air regulations by doing practice maneuvers over populated areas, said Sgt. Mark Utley of the L.A. County Sheriff's Aero Bureau.

Utley did not know exactly where the plane was flying.

PG&E helps fund student awards

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. has donated $13,850 to the California State University Enrollment
 Foundation for Future Scholars to help fund the William Randolph Hearst/CSU Trustees' Award for Outstanding Achievement.

The donation will help financially needy students who demonstrate superior academic performance and outstanding volunteer community service. Award winners typically have not only overcome great personal and financial obstacles to excel in school, but also have given generously of themselves to help others.

The William Randolph Hearst/CSU Trustees' Award for Outstanding Achievement will provide one scholarship of $6,000 and 18 scholarships valued at $3,000 in the 2006-07 academic year.
