Three convicted in teen's murder

Three men who wanted to avenge the stabbing of a friend were convicted Wednesday of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder for their roles in the shooting death of a 15-year-old boy.

Trial testimony showed they were accomplices to the killing of 15-year-old Santiago Polanco of Sun Valley near Francis Polytechnic High School in Sun Valley on Dec. 13, 2001. The actual alleged killer, 25-year-old Juan Chavez, remains at large.

Authorities name shooting victim

GLENDALE - A 46-year-old man who was Glendale's first homicide victim of the year has been identified by authorities as Hamik Ordookhanian.

Ordookhanian lived at the address where he was shot Jan. 30 in the 3600 block of Virginia Street in Glendale, said Lt. Cheryl MacWillie of the county coroner's office. An autopsy revealed he was shot multiple times in the head.

Glendale police continue to search for Ordookhanian's killers.

Orange Line bus, car collide Feb. 2

After going accident-free during January, the Metro Orange Line had a minor, noninjury crash Feb. 2 when a motorist ran a red light and collided with the bus, officials said Wednesday.

Also, officials told a City Council committee that near-misses are on the rise after dipping during December and January.

Math, sciences building at CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  

NORTHRIDGE - California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. Ventura County saving greenbelts

VENTURA - Ventura County supervisors tightened development rules to protect thousands of acres between Santa Paula Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc.  and Ventura from urban sprawl.

The ordinance approved Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors preserves 27,900 acres as greenbelts. County planning official Deborah Millais said the ordinance specifies the acreage involved and makes the law hard to undo.

To alter the new greenbelt ordinance, four of the five supervisors would have to agree and hold a public hearing.

In 2000, supervisors adopted a companion greenbelt that preserves 72,000 acres of citrus and avocado fields and open land between Fillmore and the Los Angeles County line.

Council gives OK to new planners

The City Council voted Wednesday to confirm two of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's nominees to the West Los Angeles
  • West Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, a neighborhood of Los Angeles
  • West Los Angeles (region), a popularly identified region of Los Angeles, incorporating the neighborhood above
 Area Planning Commission.

The council voted 14-0 to confirm David Washington and Sean Burton to the citizen oversight panel, which helps set the planning agenda for West Los Angeles. Councilman Tom LaBonge was absent.

CSUN to provide income tax help

NORTHRIDGE - Low-income residents and families can get free help preparing their state and federal income taxes from 300 students at Cal State Northridge's College of Business and Economics.
