Woman, 92, found beaten to death

PANORAMA CITY - A 92-year-old woman was bludgeoned to death while performing her daily ritual of picking up recyclable cans and bottles around her Panorama City neighborhood, officials said Friday.

Neighbors found the unidentified woman lying on the sidewalk in front of an apartment building in the 9000 block of Willis Avenue at 6:15 a.m. Thursday, Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  police Detective Jim Freund Jim Freund is a radio personality and a prominent figure in the speculative fiction community as host of the Pacifica Radio show Hour of the Wolf and as curator of the New York Review of Science Fiction Reading Series.  said. The woman lived nearby.

``This is pretty terrible,'' Freund said. ``A little old lady just walking down the street, doing her thing every day, just out of the blue, to be murdered like that.''

The woman suffered blunt-force trauma to the head, Freund said.

Residents told authorities they saw the woman walking through the neighborhood every morning, picking up recyclable products, although she did not appear to need the money, Freund said. She was not homeless nor a transient, and neighbors were used to her early morning routine.

Police do not know if the woman was robbed because they do not yet know what she usually brought with her on her morning walks, Freund said. Detectives are still trying to determine a motive.

``We've canvassed the area, and we're unable to find any witnesses to what happened, outside of the people that discovered her,'' Freund said.

Anyone with any information on the crime is asked to the Mission Area Police Station at (818) 838-9800 and ask for a homicide detective.

South Bay beach cleanup begins

MANHATTAN BEACH - Cleanup efforts began Friday along one of the South Bay beaches that was re- closed earlier this week when elevated bacteria levels were detected below the sand from last month's massive sewage spill.

A 15-by-15-foot area at Marine Avenue and 21st Street is being treated with a bleach and water solution that is much stronger than the chlorine previously used, officials said. If test results, expected Monday, show the solution has lowered bacteria levels to meet state standards, the solution will be applied to areas near 21st Street and underneath the Manhattan Beach Pier.

Officials do not know when the beach areas will reopen.
