Blacks pressed to donate blood

Less than a day's supply is available of two blood types commonly seen among blacks, prompting the American Red Cross American Red Cross: see Red Cross.  on Monday to encourage more African-Americans in Southern California to donate.

Jackson to lead rites for Rawls

The Rev. Jesse Jackson will lead last rites Friday for Lou Rawls, the velvet-voiced singer of ``You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine'' and ``Lady Love'' who died of cancer last week.

Man with knife robs restaurant

GLENDALE - A man with a knife robbed a Yoshinoya fast-food restaurant, making off with about $300 from a safe, police said Monday.

The robbery at the restaurant, at 4000 San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the , occurred about 8:30 a.m. Sunday. An employee was inside cleaning and taking out the trash when a man armed with an 8-inch kitchen knife came in and robbed the restaurant.

The suspect was described as a man wearing blue jeans, a black or blue baseball cap and a scarf with a Christmas decoration that covered his face, police said.

Metrolink crash fatality identified

BURBANK - The motorist who was killed last week when her sedan was hit by a Metrolink train in Burbank was identified Monday as Maureen Bannon Osborn, 76, of Glendale, said officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Coroners.

Transit officials said Osborn drove around crossing gates and onto the train's path about 8:25 a.m. Friday at San Fernando Road and Buena Vista Street. Train 208 was carrying about 280 passengers, but none was hurt.

 bureau gets software upgrade

A software development firm with offices in Los Angeles and Vienna, Va., will provide an information-tracking system for the LAPD's Counter Terrorism and Criminal Intelligence Bureau, authorities said Monday.

The system, designed by Memex Inc., will connect divisional units within the bureau ``in a sensitive, but unclassified environment,'' providing around-the-clock intelligence and analysis capabilities in a single center, said LAPD Lt. Paul Vernon.

Also, officers within the divisional units will have access to a system that can gather, analyze and disseminate information as part of a comprehensive intelligence cycle, Vernon said.

The commission voted 7-0 to approve a $3.2 million contract with Sun Valley-based Pena Grading and Demolition Inc., and a $2.6 million contract with New York City-based TEG/LVI Environmental Services Inc. to remove homes northeast and east of LAX.
