Sprint on freeway fatal for motorist

NORTH HILLS - A 26-year-old Panorama City man was killed early Thursday after police said he crashed his car on a North Hills street, ran onto the San Diego Freeway The San Diego Freeway (Interstate 405, and the part of Interstate 5 south of the El Toro Y[1]) is one of the principal north-south highways in Southern California, and the major beltway of I-5 running through Southern California.  and was struck by an oncoming Ford Explorer.

Police believe Fidel Cuevas crashed his car into another vehicle on Roscoe Boulevard at about 2 a.m. Cuevas then ran up the Roscoe Boulevard onramp to the northbound San Diego freeway, said California Highway Patrol spokesman Leland Tang.

``For reasons still unknown this person ran across the northbound lane, and was struck by the Ford Explorer,'' Tang said.

Cuevas was pronounced dead at the scene, Tang said. The driver of the Ford Explorer, a 32-year-old man from Granada Hills, was uninjured, Tang said.

An investigation is ongoing, Tang said.

Police arrest 36 during Rose Bowl

PASADENA - Police arrested 36 people for misdemeanor offenses at the Rose Bowl during a national championship game where excited fans were mostly well-behaved, police said Thursday.

The game on Wednesday drew 93,986 fans to the venerable stadium, where the University of Texas Longhorns defeated top-ranked USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. .

Thirty-two men and four women were arrested for public intoxication, ticket scalping and other crimes, Pasadena police spokeswoman Ronnie Nanning said.

``Considering the number of people in attendance, the number of arrests was very manageable,'' police Cmdr. Chris Vicino said in a prepared statement.

Rose Bowl spokesman Charles Thompson said cleaning up the stadium will take about a week as workers pick up trash, strip down the field and dismantle barricades.

Children's play leads to death

COMPTON - Sheriff's arson and homicide detectives determined that a fire in a mobile home that claimed the life of a 2-year-old boy in an unincorporated area near Compton was caused by children playing with matches.

The blaze at the Compton Knolls Mobile Home Park in the 15000 block of Wadsworth Avenue in West Rancho Dominguez broke out around 6 Wednesday night, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Diane Hecht.

Firefighters arrived in eight minutes and extinguished the blaze 15 minutes later, Los Angeles County Fire Department Not to be confused with Los Angeles Fire Department.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD), serves unincorporated parts of Los Angeles County, as well as 58 cities and towns that choose to have the county provide fire and EMS services, including the City of La
 Capt. Mark Savage said.

On overnight investigation determined that the fire was an accident, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Bill Spear.
