Masry memorial set for Thursday in city

THOUSAND OAKS Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Masry, 73, died Dec. 5 from complications of diabetes, and a private memorial service was held Dec. 13.

Masry is a former mayor of Thousand Oaks who became famous with his legal assistant, Erin Brockovich, when their work on behalf of the residents of Hinkley, Calif., was featured in the Academy Award-winning movie ``Erin Brockovich.''

More city planners to come on board

The Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  City Planning Department expects to hire 20 new planners over the next three months to expand its scope and process the high volume of development projects, officials said Tuesday.

Browning Ferris target of complaint

SUN VALLEY - City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo's office on Tuesday filed a five-count criminal complaint against the Sun Valley operation of Browning Ferris Industries relating to the storage of hazardous materials.

Delgadillo said that during an inspection last August, investigators from his environmental justice unit discovered problems with a gasoline tank, including the lack of a vapor recovery system, as well as problems with roofing tiles and heating ducts that may have contained asbestos.

Arraignment A criminal proceeding at which the defendant is officially called before a court of competent jurisdiction, informed of the offense charged in the complaint, information, indictment, or other charging document, and asked to enter a plea of guilty, not guilty, or as otherwise permitted  is scheduled for Feb. 15. Penalties could be up to $250,000, officials said.

School board race attracts hopefuls

Five candidates met Tuesday's deadline to file nominating papers to run for the Los Angeles school The Los Angeles School of Urbanism is an academic movement emerged during the mid-1980s, loosely based at the University of Southern California and UCLA, that poses a challenge to the dominant Chicago School of Urbanism.  board seat left vacant when Jose Huizar was elected to the City Council, City Clerk officials said.

Those who submitted nominating petitions for the March 7 election are:

It was unclear whether William Michael Morrison, a community political consultant, submitted his paperwork on time.

Man in shooting dies; is identified

A man who apparently shot himself in the head after firing at officers on New Year's Eve was identified Tuesday by police.

Michael Richter, 27, was removed from life support and declared dead at Queen of Angels Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, formerly known as Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, is a hospital in Los Angeles, California, USA.  on Monday, according to an officer with the Robbery-Homicide unit that investigates officer-involved shootings.

According to police, Richter, who had been in a fight with his wife and reportedly put a gun to her head, opened fire on two officers after they stopped his black 1989 Nissan Pathfinder in the 300 block of North Occidental Boulevard about 10:20 p.m. Saturday.
