Students charged in plot to murder

5.5 million plan travel for holidays

Seven people took out nominating petitions to run for the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Tujunga cyclist killed in pursuit

LA TUNA CANYON - A motorcyclist was killed Monday when he crashed while being chased by California Highway Patrol officers, authorities said.

The 19-year-old Tujunga man died at the scene of the 12:45 a.m. crash on La Tuna Canyon Road, west of Ledge Avenue, officials said. Authorities withheld his name, pending family notification.

Donation will help Latinos be nurses

A $1 million contribution to the California Latino Medical Association will provide four-year scholarships to Latino nursing students at 17 colleges throughout the county, officials said Monday.

The contribution from the Blue Cross of California Foundation is the largest donation ever received by CaLMA. Officials hope the scholarships will encourage more Latinos to consider nursing.

Burglary suspect gives up to police

SILVER LAKE - A woman believed to be a burglary suspect who holed up in a Silver Lake home and opened fire at police surrendered after about two hours Monday, police said.

No officers were hurt in the confrontation in the 2400 block of Griffith Park Boulevard and police did not fire back, said Sgt. Patricia Milewski of the Los Angeles Police Department's Northeast Division.
