Toll-free number to provide alerts

Caltrans is adding general safety messages and Amber Alerts to its toll-free highway information number, the first state transportation department in the country to do so, officials said.

The messages will be included on the California Highway Information Network number, (800) 427-7623. The CHIN number, established in 1994, has provided updated information on highway conditions to more than 62 million callers.

Under the new plan, general safety messages will be added to the information on highway conditions. And if there is an Amber Alert, issued in cases of child abductions, callers will hear that information instead of the general safety messages.
