Looking Glass Looking Glass - A desktop manager for Unix from Visix.  to celebrate 35 years

Looking Glass, the local nonprofit agency that provides services to Lane County youths, will celebrate its 35th anniversary Friday at the Eugene Country Club.

The agency was founded in 1970 to address the problem of teenage runaways. Today it serves 6,500 at-risk youths and their families annually with 10 different programs that include counseling, substance abuse treatment, 24-hour crisis intervention crisis intervention Psychiatry The counseling of a person suffering from a stressful life event–eg, AIDS, cancer, death, divorce, by providing mental and moral support. Great Rotary Duck Race all lined up

Come Saturday, 60,000 ducks will make a sudden appearance on the Willamette River in an annual - though brief - migratory ritual.

It's the 2005 Great Rotary Duck Race, an annual benefit for agencies working to prevent child abuse. This year's recipients include Birth to Three, Center for Community Counseling, Parent Partnership, Relief Nursery and Willamette Family.

People buy rubber ducks for $5. The ducks are dumped into the Willamette River, at the Autzen footbridge. It features duck ponds, bicycle trails, and a dog park, and directly touches the Ferry Street Bridge. , where they are plucked from the water near the Ferry Street Bridge. It's not too late to purchase a duck. Rotary club members will be selling them at Alton Baker Park up until 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The race begins at noon.

At last year's event, Rotarians raised more than $200,000.

Cajun buffet to aid displaced students

Culinary arts and hospitality management students at Lane Community College will hold a Cajun buffet Friday to benefit fellow students displaced by the Gulf Coast hurricanes.

The Student-to-Student buffet will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Center for Meeting and Learning (Building 19) on LCC's main campus. The cost is $25 per person, $8 for children ages 7 to 12 and free for children under 7.

The Lane County Veterinary Medical Association will hold a lottery at 2 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Greenhill Humane Society to award 10 cat spays, 10 cat neuters, 10 dog spays and 10 dog neuters. Others may be chosen if low-income status can't be verified or more funds are available.

Lane County residents can qualify for the lottery by filling out an application and providing proof of low-income status by furnishing a current Oregon Trail card, WIC WIC - WAN Interface Card  card, Medicaid card, proof of low-income (Section 8) housing, OHP OHP Oregon Health Plan

Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk set

Lane County residents can join the fight against Alzheimer's disease Alzheimer's disease (ăls`hī'mərz, ôls–), degenerative disease of nerve cells in the cerebral cortex that leads to atrophy of the brain and senile dementia.  at the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk on Sunday.

The event will take place rain or shine at Valley River Center Valley River Center is a shopping mall located in Eugene, Oregon. As the largest shopping center south of Portland and north of San Francisco, this mall comprises over 130 local and national stores and restaurants.  with inside walkers meeting near Macy's court, or outside near the Greenway footbridge.

Registration will begin at 1 p.m. with the opening ceremony at 1:50 p.m. The walk will take place at 2 p.m., ending with the closing ceremony around 3:15 p.m.

The event is to raise public awareness and funds for local services for people with the disease, their families and their caregivers. The Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk is the largest nationwide fundraising event for support programs for Alzheimer's disease, the fourth leading cause of death for older Americans.

A memory wall displaying photos or other mementos will give participants the opportunity to honor loved ones and friends with Alzheimer's disease or a related disorder. Activities will include a fun court, petting zoo and entertainment, as well as vintage cars.

Drivers can help put brakes on fatalities

Lane County is asking residents to mark "Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day" on Sunday by taking basic safety precautions.

Nationally, about 42,000 traffic fatalities occur every year - one fatality every 13 minutes. Here are three ways to improve safety:

Slow down and buckle up.

Support highway safety improvements.

Maintain your vehicle. That includes proper tire inflation pressure, "winterizing" your vehicle in cold climates, replacing worn windshield wipers

Child safety awareness event scheduled

 LifePrint Child Safety Program will offer a child safety awareness event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Kendall Auto Mall, 846 Goodpasture Island Road.

Parents are encouraged to bring their children to this free child safety program. After each child goes through the line, parents will receive a Child Safety Journal with digital photograph, video CD of their child, and detailed instructions on how to use the DNA identification kit at home.

The only record of the visit is handed to the parent. The event sponsor does not keep a record.

Eugene business task force meets today

Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy's Sustainable Business Task Force will hold a technical assistance and education roundtable today at 1:30 p.m. The meeting will be in the conference room of the new downtown fire station, 13th Avenue and Willamette Street. The task force is studying ways to support and expand sustainable businesses in Eugene.
