Southland Marine dies of gunshot

OXNARD - A 19-year-old Marine from Oxnard died Monday from a noncombat-related gunshot wound at Camp Baharia in Iraq, the U.S. military announced Tuesday.

The death of Pfc. Elijah M. Ortega is under investigation and no additional information will be released until the probe is complete, said 2nd Lt. Barry Edwards, a spokesman for the 2nd Marine Division.

The investigation could take several weeks or months to complete, he added.

Friday deadline set for applying

NORTHRIDGE- Students interested in attending California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , this spring must apply before the close of business on Friday.

The deadline applies to first-time freshman and lower-division transfer students. However, students interested in getting a graduate degree from the university can continue to submit applications after Friday.

3 more schools set to open today

The Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  today will open three more schools, including Noble New Elementary School 1 in Panorama City.

Along with Harvard Elementary School and Fremont New Primary Center 2 in Los Angeles, the three schools are among 32 new campuses scheduled to open in the 2005-06 school year - part of the district's 10-year $9.2 billion construction program - but most of the campuses opened in July and early September.

Jury convicts man of killing agents

Fire from vehicles spreads for acres

SANTA CLARITA - A flatbed truck with a Jeep on it that was also towing a mobile home caught fire Tuesday night on the southbound Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. It is signed as California State Highway 14 along its length. It connects Greater Los Angeles to the rapidly developing Antelope Valley. , causing a 10-acre brush fire, authorities said.

The vehicle fire occurred on the freeway about one mile south of San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles.
