Man thought dead in Castaic Lake Castaic Lake is a lake on Castaic Creek formed by Castaic Dam, in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, near the town of Castaic. The 323,700 acre foot lake (399,000,000 m³) is the terminus of the West Branch of the California Aqueduct, though some comes from the 154 mi²  

CASTAIC - A 19-year-old man was presumed dead after he jumped off a boat Sunday and disappeared in 170 feet of murky water in Castaic Lake, officials said.

The man jumped off a boat in the northwest portion of the upper lake, and the man ``became distressed'' and went underwater, said Fire Department Capt. Mark Savage.

The teen was swimming in water about 170 feet deep, Savage said.

SAG board OKs deal on animation

LOS ANGELES Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  - The Screen Actors Guild national board approved a new three-year TV animation contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the actors union announced Sunday.

The deal - which runs retroactively from July 1, 2005, to June 30, 2008 - includes an annual 3 percent increase in minimum pay, and a 1 percent boost in contributions to the union's benefit plans, beginning Jan. 1 of next year, according to SAG.

2 killed when car plunges off road

MALIBU - A car filled with teenagers plunged off an embankment and rolled over several times early Sunday, killing a 17-year-old girl and a male companion and leaving two others seriously injured.

Police blamed the crash on drinking.

The California Highway Patrol said the 1999 Acura was traveling northbound on Malibu Canyon Road just before 1 a.m. when it veered off the road and rolled down a 50-foot embankment.

The passengers in the rear seat - a teenage girl from Arcadia and a male believed to be in his late teens - died after being ejected from the vehicle.

The 18-year-old driver and another passenger, 19, both from Van Nuys, suffered major injuries and were taken to UCLA Medical Center UCLA Medical Center is a hospital located on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles in Los Angeles, California. Patrol vehicle hits automobile on call

LANCASTER - A sheriff's deputy responding to a ``shots fired'' call in Lancaster collided with another car, leaving the deputy and a passenger in the other car slightly injured, authorities said Sunday.

The collision at Avenue K and 30th Street West occurred about 11:15 Saturday night, according to deputies at the Lancaster station.

Deputy Guillermo Martinez was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital to be checked out after complaining of back pain, deputies said.

Martinez, who had switched on the patrol car's emergency lights and siren, was driving south on 30th Street West when his car collided with the Toyota, which was headed west on Avenue K, deputies said.

Soonbok Whong, 63, of Lancaster, who was driving the Toyota, was uninjured, but passenger Phillip Whong, also 63, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital, according to the watch deputy at the station.

Firefighters put out house blaze

Firefighters put out a noninjury blaze at a home in South Los Angeles South Los Angeles is the official name for a large geographic and cultural area lying to the southwest and southeast of downtown Los Angeles, California. Fire crews sent at 4:27 a.m. to the 700 block of West 141st Street had the flames out in less than 15 minutes, said Los Angeles Fire Department The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), also known as the Los Angeles City Fire Department to distinguish it from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It is the agency that provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Los Angeles.  spokesman Brian Humphrey.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
