Cardenas seeks report on buffer

A Los Angeles city official on Wednesday revived the debate over controlling lap dancing, citing a recent federal court ruling that allows buffer zones between dancers and customers.

Councilman Tony Cardenas called for a report from the City Attorney's Office regarding the city of La Habra's requirement of a two-foot buffer, a rule upheld by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

The city has tried to regulate lap dancing in the past. Last year, it adopted a proposal that banned direct contact between dancers and customers, but officials said it has been difficult to enforce.

In the La Habra case, Cardenas said the court ruled cities have the power to regulate adult businesses because of the negative impact on the community.
