Citizens invited to help the police

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - The Police Department is taking reservations for its free Citizen's Police Academy Citizen's Police Academy is a program designed to acquaint individuals who are not sworn police officers with the activities of their local police department.

The programs vary by department.
, open to residents of Simi Valley who want to learn more about police work and the criminal justice system.

Enrollment is open to adults who live or work in Simi Valley, and applicants undergo screening that includes a criminal history check. People who complete the program may be eligible to become civilian volunteers for the Simi Valley Police Department The Simi Valley Police Department (SVPD) is the police department of the city of Simi Valley, California. The department currently has over 120 sworn officers, and more than 65 support personnel[1]. The department has a patrol area that covers over 39 square miles. .

Classes run 6-9:30 p.m. Thursdays for 12 weeks, beginning Aug. 25.

Hours announced for passport filing

SIMI VALLEY - Passport applications are being processed by appointment, 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.

Information about applying for a passport may be obtained at www.trave.state.gov. For information about fees and requirements, and to schedule appointments, call (805) 583-6066.

Groups honored by county board

VENTURA - Several organizations were honored recently by the Workforce Investment Board Workforce Investment Boards (or "WIBs") are regional entities created to implement the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 in the United States, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of Palau and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.  of Ventura County for helping to strengthen the county's work force.

The Ventura County Community College District and Community Memorial Hospital received the Collaborative Action Award for working together to help to meet employer needs and improve the relevance of education and training.

Seminis, one of the world's largest developers and marketers of fruit and vegetable seeds, received the Lifelong Learning Lifelong learning is the concept that "It's never too soon or too late for learning", a philosophy that has taken root in a whole host of different organisations. Lifelong learning is attitudinal; that one can and should be open to new ideas, decisions, skills or behaviors.  Award for the company's efforts to provide education and training opportunities.

Women's Economic Ventures, a nonprofit agency helping women become economically self-sufficient, received the Champion for Job Growth Award.

SIMI VALLEY - Ventura County Supervisor Judy Mikels was elected senior vice president for the National Association of Regional Councils at the group's recent annual conference.

She has served as a California district representative on the Association of Regional Council's governing board since 2001 on behalf of the Southern California Association of Governments.
