Extortion charged in illegal towing

The owner of a Van Nuys-based towing company was charged Wednesday with 57 counts of illegally towing vehicles and extorting money from their owners, according to according to

The City Attorney's Office is also charging the company with the same crimes. The company cannot face jail time but could be forced to pay the fines, said Frank Mateljan, spokesman for the City Attorney's Office.

A Woodland Hills man and 10 other people were arrested Wednesday on suspicion of laundering the proceeds from a ring that imported opium.

Fire panel cancels today's session

Metrolink fare hearing tonight

CHATSWORTH - Metrolink will hold a public hearing at 6 tonight at the Chatsworth Station, 10038 Old Depot Plaza Road, on proposed fare hikes to cover soaring gas prices.

The agency is seeking fare increases up to 9.25 percent to cover as much as $1.7 million in additional costs next year. The proposed increase would be in addition to previously approved fare hikes that take effect July 1.

Sea lion caught, returned to sea

A 300-pound sea lion was released into the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday after spending nearly 10 days inside a power plant's water intake tank.
