Moorpark claims mammoth bones

MOORPARK - The city has claimed ownership of mammoth bones, perhaps more than 1 million years old, unearthed Unearthed is the name of a Triple J project to find and "dig up" (hence the name) hidden talent in regional Australia.

Unearthed has had three incarnations - they first visited each region of Australia where Triple J had a transmitter - 41 regions in all.

The moving force behind it was a museum association founded in 1910.  that the city is claiming ownership of the bones and is willing to discuss possibilities for curatorship, reconstruction, potential display, ownership and related costs.

The ancient remains were uncovered March 30 by construction crews grading land for the Meridian Hills housing project.

Paleontologist Mark Roeder, who led the excavation, brought some of the mammoth bones to the council meeting. The creature, estimated at 12 feet tall at the shoulders with 8-foot tusks, is believed to be 800,000 years to 1.4 million years old, he said.

WOODLAND HILLS - Councilman Dennis Zine honored seven West Valley public safety officers Thursday during his third annual Z-Awards luncheon.

The Z-Awards luncheon, held this year at the Warner Center Marriott, honors law enforcement officers and firefighters who dedicate their lives to providing a safe environment in the West Valley.

$1 million drive aimed at litterers

Los Angeles County and Caltrans will spend more than $1 million on a campaign aimed at reducing litter and storm water pollution, officials said Thursday.

``Don't Trash California'' ads will appear locally during the next nine months as part of a $6.5 million statewide campaign by Caltrans to reduce litter and pollutants that enter roadside storm drains and eventually find their way to the ocean.

Rotary collects packs for kids

WOODLAND HILLS - In an effort to help underprivileged foster children, the Rotary Club of Woodland Hills is accepting donations of canvas convention bags and backpacks filled with school supplies.

The public is asked to drop off their donations at Luu's Hairdesign, 22150 Ventura Blvd., No. 101, Woodland Hills by May 20. The donation will give a child something of their own when they have not much else.
