Monday temperature

of 71 ties record for date

It was warm Monday. Record warm, in fact.

The National Weather Service recorded a high temperature of 71 at Eugene Airport. That tied the record for the date set in 2001.

It might reach 70 again today, according to some forecasts. But that would fall short of the record of 74, set in 1953. The rest of the week is supposed to be sunny and warm, with temperatures in the mid- or high 60s and lows in the low 40s.

No rain is forecast for the week. Less than 3 inches has been recorded at the Eugene Airport so far this year, far below the normal average of 15.26 inches that has usually fallen by this date.

COOS BAY - Three years to the day when he was last seen, the remains of a North Bend man have been tentatively identified as those of 26-year-old Brandon Lee Brink, according to the Coos County sheriff's office.

About 12:30 a.m. Saturday, two local men sport diving near the Bureau of Land Management boat ramp on the North Spit discovered a submerged vehicle that appeared to have been there for a couple of years based on underwater plant growth.

Divers from the North Bend Fire Department determined that there were human remains in the vehicle, and the fire department, with help from a local towing company, pulled it from the water Saturday around 2 p.m.

The Coos County medical examiner's office sent the remains to Eugene for autopsy. There were no signs of a crime.

Brink's family reported him missing May 1, 2002, but he was last seen March 5, 2002, in the Coos County area, according to the Coos County sheriff's office.

No charges in incident that killed OSU player

OREGON CITY - No one will face criminal charges in the death of an Oregon State University football player who was killed in a road rage incident last summer, a Clackamas County grand jury decided Monday.

Justin Williams, 19, a redshirt freshman cornerback, was a passenger in a pickup that was hit by another vehicle on Interstate 5, about 20 miles south of Portland after a confrontation with the driver of the other car, police said at the time.

Williams, of Los Banos, Calif. was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Jurors in Clackamas County have been reviewing the case for two weeks.

``The grand jury deliberated and decided there was not sufficient evidence to find either driver criminally liable in this case,'' said Clackamas County Deputy District Attorney Brian Brock.

The pickup was driven by Williams' uncle, 40-year-old Michael Keyes of Harrisburg, a former player at Oregon State. Keyes and Jason Williams, Justin's brother, were taken to Portland area hospitals with minor injuries after the accident.

Timothy Senske, 27, the driver of the other vehicle, and his passenger, Sonjulaine Jurasz, 34, were uninjured.
