Council candidate arrested in spam

Former Thousand Oaks City Council candidate Daniel Avila was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of felony computer fraud, identity theft, false personation The crime of falsely assuming the identity of another to gain a benefit or avoid an expense.

 and election fraud charges, according to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

A joint investigation by the Sheriff's Department and the Southern California High Technology Task Force found that Avila, 25, allegedly sent thousands of text messages to local cell phone subscribers. The messages appeared to have been sent by former Thousand Oaks Mayor Bob Wilson, who was ousted in the Nov. 2 elections.

More than 100 people sent e-mails to Wilson angry over being awakened by the spam call.

Avila was released after posting a $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned March 4.

Panel will focus on gang problem

In an effort to focus more attention on the city's gang problem, Los Angeles officials on Wednesday created a special panel to coordinate various programs.

Man riding moped moped: see motorcycle.  dies in collision

SUNLAND - A 62-year-old man on a moped died after a collision with a vehicle in Sunland, police said.

Detective Bill Bustos, with the Valley Traffic Division, said the moped driver was traveling west on Foothill Boulevard near Hillrose Street about 7:10 p.m. Tuesday when he was struck from behind by a 1997 Toyota Avalon driven by an 86-year-old female driver. The moped driver was transported to a local hospital, where he died about 11:20 p.m. Tuesday.

Police are still investigating the incident, Bustos said. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending the notification of relatives, according to the Los Angeles Coroner's Office.

The indictment alleges that the defendants conspired to steal U.S. Treasury checks from a postal facility and, with the help of employees at financial institutions and other businesses, to cash those checks.

If convicted, the defendants could face up to 25 years in federal prison. The Marsh brothers also are charged with five counts of money laundering and five counts of structuring cash transactions to avoid federal reporting requirements.

College district salvages paper

The Los Angeles Community College District The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is the community college district serving Los Angeles, California and some of its neighboring cities. In addition to typical college aged students, the LACCD also serves adults of all ages.  has put 3,000 surplus blueprint documents to good use, recycling them into 50,000 scratch pads.

The blueprints, part of the district's $2.2 billion Proposition A/AA bond construction program, were chopped into 5 1/2-by-8 1/2-inch sheets and bound together. Ford Graphics did the work at no cost to the district.

Small-plane crash leaves eight dead

Eight people were killed Wednesday morning when a small plane en route to Southern California crashed just outside Pueblo, Colo., about 120 miles south of Denver, as it approached the local airport. The plane is registered to Circuit City Stores, and four of its employees were among the dead.

``We have no indication at this time as to why the plane crashed,'' said Deputy Steve Bryant of the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office.

Bryant said there were no confirmed eyewitnesses to the crash, which occurred just after 9 a.m. in ``very overcast'' conditions and ``kind of a drizzly rain.''
