Crow Car Show and Shine

to benefit school district

CROW - Classic cars, children's games, a community garage sale and a street dance will be part of the third annual Crow Car Show and Shine on Saturday.

The 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. event will benefit the Crow-Applegate-Lorane School District.

The family event begins with an 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. pancake feed at the Crow Grange, followed by a car show and community garage sale in downtown Crow with sack races and water games for children.

A Soap Box Derby-style race for kids 16 or younger will begin at 12:30 p.m., with a barbecued chicken dinner served by the Crow Booster Club A booster club is an organization that is formed to contribute money to an associated club, sports team, or organization. Pie bakers prepare

for Blackberry Jam

LOWELL - The aroma of baking pies will fill the air here this weekend as local residents prepare the signature dish A signature dish is a recipe that identifies an individual chef. Ideally it should be unique and allow an informed gastronome to name the chef in a blind tasting. It can be thought of as the culinary equivalent of an artist finding their own style, or an author finding their own  for their 10th annual Blackberry Jam. New events will include a petting zoo, 29-foot slide and a carnival, Jam Chairman Mike Galvin said.

The free festival begins Friday at 5 p.m. in downtown Lowell's Rolling Rock Rolling Rock is a brand of pale lager beer. Although founded as a local beer in Western Pennsylvania, it was marketed aggressively and eventually became a national product. The brand was sold to Anheuser-Busch of St.  Park. Live music for the evening will include the U-Gene Band at 6 p.m. and Coupe de Ville at 9 p.m.

Things will start at 6 a.m. Saturday with a pancake breakfast and the $10,000 fishing derby Fishing Derby is an Atari 2600 video game created by Activision programmer David Crane based on the sport of fishing.

In Fishing Derby, two fishermen sit on opposite docks over a lake filled with fish (and a shark that passes through).
 on Dexter Lake. Participating anglers will try to hook one of 10 fish tagged by the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife. Nine of the tags carry a $50 prize, while one is worth $10,000. Tickets for the derby are required for each day and may be purchased in advance from local retailers or at the Lowell Marina on Saturday only.

A parade begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, with retiring fire Chief Jan Mann as Grand Marshall, followed by a blackberry pie Blackberry pie is pie composed of blackberry filling, usually in the form of either blackberry jam, actual blackberries themselves, or some combination thereof. Blackberry pie is somewhat sweeter than blueberry pie, usually requiring only a sprinkle of sugar for taste, whereas the  baking and eating contest at 1:30 p.m.

Saturday music will include the Inspirational Sounds at noon; Trammels and Co. at 2 p.m.; Neal Harris at 3 p.m.; Devotion at 4:30 p.m.; Liesel Alkire & Scott Ruby at 6 p.m.; and Sticky Mouse at 9 p.m.

Sunday music will be provided by Dharmika & Leslie at noon, followed by Community Karaoke at 1 p.m.

Quilt and Treasures Show

PLEASANT HILL - Antique and new quilts will be on display Saturday at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church's third annual Quilt and Treasures Show. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the church, just off Highway 58 at 84520 N. Enterprise Road. Demonstrations are scheduled throughout the day. Hand-crafted quilt racks, quilt/craft books, refreshments and other items will be available for purchase. Admission is free.

"So far, most of our skate park injuries have been arm and leg injuries," said Heather Hill, the fire district's prevention coordinator. "But we also know that once a head is damaged, there's no turning back."

Under a new Oregon law, children 15 or younger are required to wear helmets while skating and skateboarding, as well as while cycling. The department aims to encourage helmet use among adults and older youth, as well.
