Yzerman, 38, made $8 million last season, when off-season knee surgery limited him to 16 games. --Former Ducks general manager Pierre Gauthier has joined the Montreal Canadiens as director of pro scouting. --The body of Duncan MacPherson, a former NHL first-round draft pick who disappeared in Austria almost 14 years ago, has been found frozen in the Alps. MacPherson, selected 20th overall by the New York Islanders in 1984, was last seen Aug. 9, 1989, while snowboarding on the Stubaier Glacier. MacPherson was 23 when he disappeared while on his way to take a job as a coach with a hockey team in Dundee, Scotland. BASEBALL: Valencia High standouts Matt Aidem and Jared Clark, both of whom set numerous school records as juniors last spring, have committed to NCAA Division I universities. Aidem, a pitcher/first baseman, is going to UC Santa Barbara, and Clark, a pitcher/outfielder, is headed to Cal State Fullerton. FOOTBALL: College of the Canyons defensive back Bryan Wilson, a former Granada Hills High standout, broke his leg last week but coach Chuck Lyon hopes he can recover in time for the season opener. SWIMMING: Jenny Thompson claimed her first individual gold medal in a major meet since 1998, winning the 100-meter butterfly in 57.96 seconds at the world championships in Barcelona, Spain. The 30-year-old Thompson swam the seventh-fastest time in history. GOLF: Michelle Wie shot a 2-under-par 69 to share the lead in the first round of the USGA Girls' Junior Championship in Fairfield, Conn. SOCCER: Lindsay Tarpley scored in the 86th minute, leading the U.S. women's under-21 team past Denmark 1-0 in the opening game of the Open Nordic Cup in Denmark. |
