9-11 memorial service planned

CANOGA PARK - A candlelight service in memory of the victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks is planned for Sept. 11, at the Madrid Theatre in Canoga Park.

West Valley Christian Church is sponsoring the event, which will include inspirational music, a multimedia presentation and a message of hope.

The vigil is set for 7 to 8 p.m. at the theater, 21622 Sherman Way. The lobby opens at 6 p.m., and doors open at 6:30 p.m. Children are welcome.

Mahony to open 'people's church'

The massive cathedral, on the corner of Temple and Grand streets in the heart of downtown's Civic Center, will be blessed in a three-hour ceremony, after which it will begin its new life as what Mahony calls the ``people's church.''

The doors to the plaza will open at 8:30 a.m. and the dedication rites will begin at 9:50 a.m.
