The pilot was unhurt in the incident at about 1 p.m. at Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport, but the plane sustained serious damage, said Jerry Johnston, an operations officer with the Federal Aviation Administration Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), component of the U.S. Department of Transportation that sets standards for the air-worthiness of all civilian aircraft, inspects and licenses them, and regulates civilian and military air traffic through its air traffic control .

The man was practicing takeoffs and landings at Whiteman when he clipped a utility line, said Burbank Airport spokesman Victor Gill. The pilot then rerouted to Burbank because it has the equipment to deal with such emergencies, Johnston said.

Gill said the plane rolled down the runway on one wheel until its wing touched the pavement, then it spun onto the grass and stopped.
