BRIEFLY WITNESS SOUGHT TO FATAL BEATING.


SUN VALLEY - A homeless man was fatally beaten after he asked for or demanded money from someone and a fight broke out, police said Thursday.

The fatal altercation in the 8300 block of San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the  was reported at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday, said Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  police Officer Renee Montoya.

Summoned to the scene, police found a 49-year-old transient, whose name was withheld,, unconscious, Montoya said. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police believe the man was asking for money when a fight erupted and friends on both sides joined in, Montoya said.

No arrests have been made, but police are asking for any witnesses to call detectives at (818) 623-4075 or (877) LAWFULL.

Armed man robs boy in Simi home

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - A masked man robbed a 12-year-old boy at gunpoint inside his home on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

 the home in the 4600 block of Hemstead Street in Simi Valley, grabbing jewelry and electronic equipment before the boy's mother arrived. The suspect was described as an African-American man of medium build, between 5 feet 7 inches and 6 feet tall.

About $3,000 in valuables were stolen.

No further details are being released because of an ongoing investigation, police said.

Council hopefuls to tell platforms

Hahn, Boxer urge funding for kids

 and U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., jointly announced Thursday that they are urging President George W. Bush not to cut funds to the nation's after-school programs like LA's Best.

The mayor said he wrote a letter to Bush about his deep concern over a proposed $400 million reduction in the 21st Century Community Learning Center program.

``In Los Angeles alone, the proposed budget cut would impact thousands of children and families who rely on and benefit from local after-school programs,'' Hahn wrote in the letter.

At the joint press conference, Boxer said she too will work to deter cuts in the after-school program budget.

Zine backs Smith for 12th District

Los Angeles Councilman Dennis Zine endorsed Greig Smith on Thursday in Smith's bid to represent the northern San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Smith is chief of staff to 12th District Councilman Hal Bernson and will face former assemblywoman Paula Boland, school board member Julie Korenstein, home-builder Robert Vinson and secession backers Walter Prince and Norman Huberman.
