BRIEFLY WILD CONDOR CHICK HAS BEGUN FLYING.


VENTURA COUNTY - The first wild-born condor chick to fly in California in twenty-two years has taken flight near the Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuge National Wildlife Refuge , officials said Thursday.

The parents will care for the chick until it is about 18 months old, officials said. Two other wild chicks were hatched in California this year, but one died and the other fell from the nest and broke its wing.

Bratton reports murders are down

Reversing a trend that saw homicides in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  hovering above last year's levels, the number of murders is down eight from year-to-date levels in 2003, Police Chief William Bratton said Thursday.

The homicide toll of 433 suggests that Los Angeles will finish 2004 with fewer murders than occurred in 2003, meaning that all major categories of crime will be down this year, Bratton said. But Bratton will not be able to meet his goal of reducing homicides by 20 percent from 2003 levels.

Mother convicted of killing newborn

A North Hills woman was convicted Thursday of second-degree murder for the suffocation suffocation: see asphyxia.  of her newborn son in August 2003.

The San Fernando Superior Court jury also found Maria Legarda, 25, guilty of assault on a child causing death.

Sentencing is set for Dec. 1. She faces a term of 40 years to life in state prison.

Man enters plea in child-sex charges

VAN NUYS - A Sherman Oaks man who had worked in the entertainment industry pleaded no contest Thursday to three sex-related charges, a prosecutor said.

Jason Michael Handy, 30, pleaded no contest to one felony count each of a lewd act with a child and sending harmful matter to a minor over the Internet, along with a misdemeanor count of sexual exploitation of a child, said Deputy District Attorney Andrea Thompson.

The charges involve three girls, ages 6 to 13, according to the prosecutor.

Hahn names picks for commissions

Mayor Jim Hahn Tuesday announced the following appointments to city commissions:

Nancy Whang, an attorney with Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, was appointed to the Central Area Planning Commission; Cecilia Nunez, a secretary for the Chubb Group of Insurance Cos., was appointed to the Central Area Planning Commission; Kaye Beckham, founder of a community-based home health care service for seniors, new mothers and newborns, was appointed to the Commission on Children, Youth and Their Families; and Susan Cline, a manager of planning and pre-construction of Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Bowl for Breath planned for today
