BRIEFLY WELBY WAY HITS IT BIG IN SOFTBALL.


CANOGA PARK - The boys' softball team from Welby Way Elementary School ..is the new champion of the Los Angeles Unified School District, emerging victorious from a weekend tournament.

The girls' team also reached the championship game Saturday, but lost, said coach Marco Thompson.

There are roughly 120 boys' fourth- and fifth-grade teams in the district and 80 girls' teams, Thompson said. The girls won the Valley section title on April 1 and the boys won the section a week later to advance to the tournament.

Soboroff adds two to committee

Los Angeles mayoral candidate Steve Soboroff announced Monday the addition of two more people to his San Fernando Valley steering committee.

Soboroff said businessman David Honda and Harbor Commissioner Carol Rowen have agreed to help him in his campaign for the 2001 election.

United adds flights at Burbank Airport

BURBANK - Residents near the Burbank Airport might hear a few more late night and early morning planes overhead this month, as United Airlines schedules two new flights that violate a voluntary curfew.

The new flights, to and from San Francisco, will bring the number of United's curfew-violating flights to four, but on June 8, residents will get some relief when all but one of United's the four violating flights - an early departure to the Bay Area - will be discontinued.
