BRIEFLY VOTE SYSTEM FINE, L.A. OFFICIALS SAY.


Contrary to claims that error-prone punch-card voting machines were to blame for 9 percent of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County voters' failing to vote on whether to recall Gov. Gray Davis on Oct. 7, a manual tally Wednesday of 1 percent of ballots cast showed the machines counted correctly.

The tally also revealed that the undervotes were not concentrated in minority or poor areas, as American Civil Liberties attorneys had expected them to be. Some of the highest percentages of voters skipping the question were in wealthier areas of the county.

Motorcycle rider dies in collision

LA CRESCENTA - A 21-year-old motorcyclist died after colliding with a sport utility vehicle Wednesday afternoon, Glendale police said.

The La Crescenta resident, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was riding his Ducati motorcycle in the 2800 block of Honolulu Avenue when he collided with a 1973 Ford Bronco The Ford Bronco was a SUV produced from 1966 through 1996, with five distinct generations.

It was initially introduced as a competitor for the Jeep CJ-5 and International Harvester Scout.

Car insurance bill prompts lawsuit

Calling it discriminatory, a consumer-rights group has asked a court to stop implementation of a bill that allows discounts to drivers who have maintained insurance coverage.

Senate Bill 841, written at the behest of Mercury Insurance Co., also authorizes insurance companies to impose a surcharge on motorists applying for coverage for the first time, according to the Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights.

Owning nuisance to become costly

The Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  approved an ordinance Wednesday that will allow the costs of shutting down nuisance properties in Los Angeles to be put on the property owner's tax bill.

Officials report there are 1,300 nuisance properties in the city. Often they are sites where owners have let vacant houses and buildings deteriorate.
