Police on Friday sought the killer of an Arleta man who had promised to donate a kidney to a sick friend.

Speed role probed in deadly collision

WINNETKA - A 19-year-old man was killed Friday when his car collided with a cargo van.

The van had turned in front of the car to go north on Winnetka, but Meck said speed on the part of the 19-year-old may have been a factor in the collision.

Suspicious device closes Metrolink

BURBANK - Metrolink service between Ventura County and Burbank was interrupted Friday afternoon, while authorities investigated a possible explosive device left at a Burbank intersection, police said.

A passing motorist saw something at Buena Vista and Vanowen streets that prompted him or her to report it about 3:30 p.m., said Burbank police Lt. Robert Giles Robert H. Giles (born circa 1933) is current curator of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism.

Tree-sitter's trial set for December

Trial of a trespassing claim against tree-sitter John Quigley is set for Dec. 10, a Los Angeles judge ruled Friday.

Quigley entered the spotlight by climbing up a centuries-old oak in Santa Clarita last November to protest John Laing Homes' plan to uproot and move the tree to clear the way to widen Pico Canyon Road from two lanes to four.

The developer claims it was under orders from Los Angeles County to move the tree - dubbed Old Glory - and widen the road in anticipation of additional traffic from its Stevenson Ranch housing project.

5 suspects jailed in auto-theft case

SUN VALLEY - Los Angeles police arrested five people Friday and shut down an auto-thief ring operating from a Sun Valley home, a detective said.

``These guys are responsible for 40 cars stolen at $20,000 apiece over three months,'' Detective Robert Graybill said.

Police broke up an operation being run out of a home in the 12000 block of Neenach Street about 8 a.m., said Los Angeles police Officer Don Cox.

Five people were arrested, including two teenagers, police said.

Rear-end crash kills driver on I-5

SUN VALLEY - A man was killed Friday on the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. Originally built as U.S. Highway 99, it was re-signed as Interstate 5 in 1964.  when his Honda sedan rear-ended a tractor-trailer in traffic.

The man was in a northbound lane near Sheldon Avenue about 4 p.m. when his car crashed into the back of the rig and slipped underneath the trailer, said California Highway Patrol Officer Bruce Gaines. The man, believed to be about 30 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not immediately identified publicly.
