A 43-year-old man died Friday after being shot by a sheriff's deputy while standing on the balcony of a home near Ojai, authorities said.

The man, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead about 1 p.m. at Ojai Valley Hospital, Ventura County sheriff's Sgt. Ron Nelson said.

Deputies were called to the home in the unincorporated community of Meiners Oaks about 9 a.m. by neighbors who said the man was firing a gun, Nelson said.

The man held police at bay for about three hours, yelling obscenities and firing several rounds from a rifle, Nelson said.

The man emerged onto a balcony just before noon and was shot once by an unidentified deputy, Nelson said.
